Curt Osgood
Dulcimer Player
Curt Osgood,of Binghamton NY, has been pleasing audiences with his dulcimer artistry for over twenty years, both as a solo and ensemble performer. The hammered dulcimer, a member of the zither family, is different from the Appalachian or fretted dulcimer in that the strings of the hammered dulcimer are tapped with little mallets or hammers rather than strummed. Its harp-like sound can invoke numerous musical textures.
. The dulcimer lends itself easily to traditional, folk, and “old-timey” music. Dulcimer artists today have expanded their repertoire to include modern compositions as well as Irish, Scottish, and American tunes. Curt, as a teacher, workshop leader, and one of the directors of the annual Cranberry Dulcimer Gathering, has contributed to the resurgence of interest in the instrument and its traditions. He has been involved in various folk organizations for over 30 years and plays guitar, clawhammer style banjo and sings as well. Curt has recently released Newfield Sessions, his first CD which also features John Kirk and Jane Knoeck throughout. On it you will hear airs, jigs, reels, and breakdowns, both old and new, from numerous traditions including Irish, Scottish, English, Old-Time, French Canadian, and more.
